When considering the question “Where should I place my beehives?“, a beekeeper should always consider the needs of their honeybee colony before focusing solely on their property’s location or the future layout of their bee yard. If the location works for you but not your bees, there’s no point… they could simply leave anytime to find a better one, after all!
As a rough overview, honeybee colonies need the following:
- Regular sunlight that is aimed directly at the hive for at least part of the day
- Consider facing the hive’s entrance toward the Southeast, if possible, to allow for maximum sun exposure at their hive’s front door!
- Good sources of pollen and nectar nearby (well, within 3 miles or so)
- Access to water (if no water source is close by, you should consider adding one!)
- Shelter from wind (especially with extremely cold temperatures)
- Protection from the threat posed by pests and/or other animals, like varroa mites that may live inside their hive, or bears that could become a threat from outside of it!
