Why is beekeeping important?

By Nicole Marois. Published April 3, 2025:

Any beekeeper can easily spend hours explaining to you why beekeeping is important to them, and with good reason, honeybees truly are such awesome creatures But beekeeping matters not just to us beekeepers; it can impact the lives of each one of us in one way or another!

Honeybees are important to agricultural and food systems worldwide. Their help with pollination supports a huge portion of the world’s food supply and aids in plant biodiversity. Even beekeeping that’s not done commercially can help support this by helping to maintain healthy bee populations. Beekeeping regulations are important to conservation efforts, too, as they track and monitor the health of colonies.

In addition to their help with pollination, worker bees who are out foraging support the ecosystems around their bee yard in other ways, too. Their contributions to biodiversity through the pollination of wild plants give a variety of species a boost that will grow to further support their own food sources and provide food and shelter for other pollinators, too. Beekeepers who pay close attention to their bees’ activities and monitor the environment for changes are often the first to notice that something can be done to help make it better, too. Just another reason that beekeeping matters not just to us or the bees but to everything around it!

Beekeeping has been considered to have economic benefits for hundreds of years due to the various bee by-products honeybee colonies may be able to share with their beekeepers. Products like honey, propolis, and beeswax have a wide variety of uses and are quite popular in various economic markets, making beekeeping important on an economic scale pretty important, too.

Because honeybee populations face so many threats, it’s so important for beekeepers to support their health and growth as much as possible. Because of their impacts on the whole world, protecting honeybee colonies and helping to sustain their populations by being a responsible beekeeper can make a huge impact on the world around your bee yard. Sharing what you’ve learned about how important beekeeping is with others, especially kids, can help promote understanding of the real importance of conservation for honeybees and the art of beekeeping.
